Haileybury Youth Trust

HYT is an award-winning charity that trains young people in climate-friendly construction and builds schools, homes and water tanks.

Working with some of Africa’s most marginalised people, HYT uses a sustainable compressed earth block, the Interlocking Stabilised Soil Block, to transform communities and refugee settlements.

HYT is East Africa’s leading advocate of a sustainable approach to building and vocational training.

In Autumn 2022 three Year 13 students and a member of staff were given the unique opportunity to visit Uganda to see the life changing work that HYT undertake, in rural Uganda and the settlement areas in Northern Uganda.

This gave them the opportunity to experience the beauty of Uganda but also the conditions in which education was undertaken, they saw, firsthand, the work HYT has undertaken to transform whole communities and the value that they have for education.

Not only were they able to experience a wide range of communities and environments, they were also able to meet the very welcoming Ugandan people. Uganda is a very green country that lies just south of the equator allowing them to grow a wide variety of crops but to also be the home of many wild animals.

As a part of our experience, they went on Safari to see Hippos, Lions, Giraffes, Elephants, and many more animals and took a cruise on the River Nile, and spent some time at the breathtaking Murchison Falls.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that future Haileybury Sixth Formers will be able to take. Our photographs show the work HYT has undertaken including planting thousands of trees, water storage, and sanitation blocks.
